Today’s Excursion – Best of Jerusalem & Old City Walking Tour
Discover Jerusalem’s ancient beauty and some of history’s most sacred sites during this scenic, full-day sightseeing tour of Israel’s capital city.
Panoramic Drive, Mount Scopus, Garden of Gethsemane
Depart the pier in Haifa for the approximate 150 min drive into the Judean Hills. On the drive to Jerusalem, familiar names caught our attention all along the way. We had a magnificent view over the Golden City from atop the Mount Scopus. We walked through the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus spent the last moments before his arrest. Early Christians were already holding gatherings here before the first church was built around AD 380. Visit the beautiful church and see some of the oldest olive trees remaining in Jerusalem. The oldest is dated to 1092 AD.
Mt. Zion
Our drive continued to Mt. Zion located south of today’s city walls. We made a visit to the Room of the Last Supper where Jesus’ last meal with his disciples and the descent of the Holy Spirit is thought to have taken place. Located on the ground floor of Mt. Zion is the Tomb of King David one of the most visited and venerated sites by people of the Jewish faith.
Old City, Walking Tour
We entered the Old City via the Zion Gate and walked through the Jewish Quarter and the Roman Cardo to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher on the site of Christ’s resurrection. The original vast sanctuary built here by Emperor Constantine was destroyed centuries later but a replacement was eventually rebuilt by the Crusaders. Inside the church, you will see the last five Stations of the Cross. They are (10) he is stripped of his garments, (11) he is nailed to the cross, (12) he dies on the cross, (13) he is taken down from the cross, and (14) he is placed in the sepulcher. Although not traditionally part of the Stations, the Resurrection of Jesus is sometimes included as an unofficial fifteenth station.
We walked through the colorful bazaar as you continue en route to the Western Wailing Wall. This is the last vestige of the ramparts that surrounded the Holy Temple of the Jews, built by Solomon, destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, rebuilt by Babylonian exiles, and burned down by Titus.

Today’s Excursion – Nazareth & Sea of Galilee

We explored the stunning scenery and historic sites where Jesus lived, preached, and performed his miracles during this captivating full-day tour of Nazareth.
Basilica of the Annunciation
We departed the pier in Haifa via coach for a one-hour drive to Nazareth the home town of Jesus.
Upon arrival in Nazareth, we visited the Basilica of the Annunciation one of Christendom’s most revered shrines and the largest church in the Middle East. The Basilica was built on the same site where the Archangel Gabriel revealed to Mary that she would be the mother of the Messiah. Sites to be seen here include the cave where the Annunciation was made, an altar and a remarkable 170-foot (52.3-meter) high cupola that rises high above the upper church. The Basilica featured magnificent mosaics, ceramic reliefs, and other superb works of art from around the world. We were it’s first visitors since COVID so we blessed with no crowds.
Church of Joseph
Our next stop was the Church of Joseph which was built over the chambers that once housed Joseph’s carpentry shop.
The Bazaar and Mary’s Well
We took a stroll through the bazaar and past Mary’s Well located in the Greek Orthodox Church at the site of an ancient underground spring where it is believed Jesus and his mother came to draw water.
Cana and the Sea of Galilee
We re-boarded our coach for the drive to Cana the place where Jesus performed his first miracle of turning water into wine. We had a buffet lunch at a hotel overlooking the Sea of Galilee. After lunch, we visited the Mount of Beatitudes the site where Jesus preached the famous Sermon on the Mount. After we proceeded to Capernaum. Located on the beautiful shores of the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum was considered to be the center of Jesus’ ministry whilst he was living in this area. Our visit includes a look at the ruins of an ancient synagogue.
Yardenit Baptismal Site
Following our visit, we re-boarded our coach for the drive along the panoramic seashore to the Yardenit baptismal site where the Jordan River separates from the Sea of Galilee. Pilgrims from around the world come here to perform baptismal ceremonies in this naturally scenic and symbolic setting. We are not sure if this is the same site in 1996 where John was re-baptized in the River Jordan during our 1995 tour with our church.
On our return drive to the pier in Haifa, we took in scenic vistas of Mount Tabor the traditional site of the transfiguration where Jesus appeared to his disciples in radiant light whilst speaking with Moses and Elijah.

HAIFA & NAZARETH, ISRAEL – THE UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE
Israel’s easy-breezy Mediterranean city is an effortlessly cool place of beach worship and night-time revelry.
Arrive on Israel’s shores at Haifa which sits below Mount Carmel and is surrounded by elaborate places of worship as well as the Baha’i Hanging Gardens – a terraced green UNESCO World Heritage Site.
As you reach the bright lights of Tel Aviv you’ll find a relaxed energetic and youthful city waiting for you. Crowded with afternoon strollers joggers and beach revelers a walk along the Tayelet promenade – from Tel Aviv’s skyscrapers to Jaffa’s historic charm – is a fantastic introduction to this dynamic city. Jaffa’s watchtower is the perfect landmark to orientate around as the cobbled streets of the old town unravel and flea markets flog exotic goods.
Head to Neve Tzedek to explore the city’s oldest neighborhood which has been successfully rejuvenated and re-energized as an artsy warren. New and exciting restaurants open on a nightly basis all over Tel Aviv and you can enjoy street food and
Middle Eastern staples – like fresh Hummus and fluffy pitas stuffed with spiced falafels into a cosmopolitan city whose port served the entire Middle East. The climate is gentle the beaches beautiful and the locals friendly.
Israel’s “city on the hill” is divided into three main levels each crisscrossed by parks and gardens: the port down below Hadar a commercial area in the middle and Merkaz Carmel (known as “the Merkaz”) with the posher hotels and many restaurants on the crest of Mt. Carmel.
YARDENIT BAPTISMAL
Yardenit baptismal is the site where the Jordan River separates from the Sea of Galilee. Pilgrims from around the
world come here to perform baptismal ceremonies in this naturally scenic and symbolic setting.
SIGHTS
• Mt. Carmel and Baha’i Gardens
• Nazareth and the Church of Annunciation
• Yardenit baptismal

CHANEL
The fashion house founded by Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel created the ultimate symbol of femininity in 1921 with Chanel No. 5 so-called because it was the fifth scent presented by its designer to Mlle. Chanel.
Nearly a century later, the timeless classic has been joined by many other scents, but all share the graceful sophistication of the firstborn.

SUEZ CANAL
The Suez Canal gouged through Africa is one of the world’s engineering marvels linking two seas and drastically shortening boat voyages around this huge continent.
Few manmade waterways are so storied and iconic and sailing the length of it is a bucket list item for many explorers.
The construction of the canal started in 1859 and took ten years to complete with the canal officially opening in November 1869. More than a million people worked on the project often in unimaginable conditions. An engineering breakthrough the canal connected the Mediterranean to the Red Sea drastically improving global trade’s efficiency.
The original canal featured a single-lane waterway with passing locations in the Ballah Bypass and the Great Bitter Lake. The Egyptian government launched construction in 2014 to expand and widen the Ballah Bypass by 35 km (22 mi) to speed up the canal’s transit time. The expansion intended to nearly double the capacity of the Suez Canal, from 49 to 97 ships per day.
The Suez Canal Authority officially opened the new side channel in 2016. This side channel, located at the northern side of the east extension of the Suez Canal, serves the East Terminal for berthing and unberthing vessels from the terminal. As the East Container Terminal is located on the Canal itself, before the construction of the new side-channel it was not possible to berth or unberth vessels at the terminal while a convoy was running.
A hugely strategic and precious bottleneck it has inevitably led to conflicts and been vulnerable to scuttling to block its usage. The Six-Day War closed the canal leaving 15 unfortunate ships trapped within for eight years. An amazing story of the crew members of the Yellow Fleet named as their ships slowly gathered desert sand adapted and created a community within the confines of Bitter Lake.
We gathered into a convoy before we entered the Suez Canal. We were fortunate to be the 1st ship in our convoy. We sat back and admired the desert views as we transited the 101 Mile expanse occasionally interrupted by little villages with domed mosques and minarets towering into the sky. Look out for the tiny fishing boats that share the canal’s waterway dwarfed by giant container ships. The plucky fishermen courageously refuse to yield to the massive vessels they sail beside.

NAKI ATAMAN – “A MUSICAL JOURNEY AROUND THE WORLD”
AT 10:00 PM THE SHOW LOUNGE, DECK 6
The son of renowned concert violinist and conductor, Zeki Ataman, Naki was born in the ancient city of Istanbul but was raised and educated in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, where
he still resides.
He began his musical studies at the age of 4 and made his stage debut at 8.
It is no surprise that Naki was chosen by the Turkish Ministry of Culture to be the official representative of the country’s cultural and goodwill interests throughout the world, thus
making him a true and unique Ambassador of Music.
In fact, Naki was chosen to represent Turkey at a concert for the United Nations Cultural conference in Vienna in 1975, for which he conceived the idea of an evening of music
encompassing all nations. His “Around the World” concert is basically that same program he created for the U.N.
As well versed in popular music, jazz, and musical comedy as he is in light classics, Naki is a favorite on concert stages throughout the world. Naki also performs on many cruise lines.
Given Naki Ataman’s background, the musical accomplishments of this multitalented man
are not surprising. Critics have used all these superlatives to describe Naki’s piano virtuosity as “dazzling, sensitive, magnificent, astonishing and unusually creative”.
Once you have witnessed this man’s talent and virtuosity, you may come up with some superlatives of your own.

Today’s Excursion – Red Sea Snorkel Adventure
We treated ourselves to an afternoon of cruising and sun on the Red Sea during this half-day snorkel adventure.
Depart the ship by shuttle coach for the approximate 20-minute transfer to the Great Arab Revolution Plaza to board your boat which is reserved exclusively for Silversea guests.
We enjoyed a fascinating cruise onboard a captivating glass-bottom boat, allowing you to admire the coral and marine life of Aqaba from a unique vantage point.
En route to the snorkel and swim location, our crew provided us with snorkeling equipment and a safety briefing. At a suitable location determined by the captain, we could don our gear and begin a fascinating exploration of the colorful coral and fish of this underwater world.
During your outing, the chef prepared a tasty barbecue lunch to enjoy while we relaxed on the covered deck and enjoyed the panoramic views of the city of Aqaba. We cruised to the boat’s docking location to join the shuttle for the return drive to the pier and our awaiting ship.

KRISTIAN GREY – ”THE COMEDY MAGICIAN”
AT 9:45 PM THE SHOW LOUNGE, DECK 6
Kristian Grey is one of Ireland’s most in-demand entertainers. Kristian began his journey in magic over ten years ago and has never looked back. What started as a hobby, quickly became a passion. Straight out of University, Kristian was booked up performing his
awe-inspiring sleight of hand at private and high-end corporate events across Ireland and the UK. After a few years of performing close-up magic, he began to develop his first full stage comedy and illusion show. After the first run of live stage shows had ended and seeing the
demand for this type of entertainment, Kristian decided to bring his show to the high seas and nowadays performs most of the year on some of the world’s most luxurious cruise ships.
Mixing his passion for prestidigitation with an infectious personality, and a touch of Irish charm, Kristian’s show is an experience not to be missed. You can expect all of the wonder and awe of magic, as well as a barrel of laughs at Kristian Grey’s comedy magic shows!

AQABA (PETRA), JORDAN – GATEWAY TO PETRA
Improbably carved into the rusty-red rock of the Jordanian desert the ancient city of Petra has been mesmerizing visitors since being rediscovered by Westerners in 1812.
Siq Canyon provides a suitably grandiose welcome cutting a deep track through layers of fiery sandstone and building up the suspense before you first set eyes on the Lost City’s majesty.
An early start is best to explore this UNESCO World Heritage Site giving you chance to beat the crowds and avoid the brunt of the heat.
The Treasury is perhaps Petra’s best-known structure having featured in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade as the mystical
hiding place of the Holy Grail. Imprinted deep into the sheer sandstone it’s a dramatic spectacular achievement of human endeavor.
Petra developed as the capital of the Nabataean Kingdom and the sophistication of the Rose Kingdom’s rock-hewn buildings is
matched only by the elaborate and advanced water collection and transportation system that quenched its thirst and provided the means to thrive despite its remote location and the intense burn of the sun. Look out for the delicate water channels that lace the city as you explore.
High above the city – up a daunting 800-step climb – stands the Monastery. The High Place of Sacrifice is an even tougher hike – with only occasional electric-blue lizards scattering from your footsteps as you rise – but the views of the remarkable city embossed into the mighty sandstone cliffs below will last a lifetime.
SHOPPING
Look for Bedouin rugs and tapestries created by local women. Brass and copperware are also popular. Small bottles of colored sand from Petra with intricate patterns make nice souvenirs. Ladies may want to get some of the Dead Sea beauty products.

Today’s Excursion – Petra – Jordan’s Treasure
We enjoyed the opportunity to visit Jordan’s most famous attraction the spectacular rose-red City of Petra during this full-day tour.
We departed the port in comfortable coaches and traveled north along the Desert Highway. After a couple of hours, we stopped at a combination tourist/coffee shop that boasted it has “The Best View in the World”. The last stretch is down a country road into the gorge below and through several small villages. Upon arrival at Petra, we began our visit on foot. The long, narrow gorge with steeply rising sides all but obliterates the sun. For those who wish the entrance to the siq may be reached on horseback. (There is no charge for this service since it is included in the entrance fee but the horseman will expect a gratuity.) The narrow gorge presented spectacular scenery with each twist and turn.
Khazneh (Treasury)
As we exited the gorge it suddenly opens into a natural square dominated by Petra’s most famous monument the Treasury. Its intricately carved façade presents a magnificent sight in the dazzling sun. If you have seen the movie Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, you will no doubt recognize the façade. If you go further into the site and discover other impressive structures carved out of the rose-colored stone. They include temples, royal tombs, and an amphitheater that could seat 3,000 spectators. The Petra basin boasts over 800 individual monuments. To explore it all would take several days.
Our visit of approximately three hours concludes with the walk back the same way. We hired a golf cart to take us back up the steep 1.5-mile-long narrow pathway of the Petra Valley as it was getting hot afternoon. Upon exiting the siq, we visited the Petra Museum which housed many of the ancient artifacts of the Nabataean Kingdom.
Afterward, we had lunch at a local tourist hotel, and re-join the coach for the 2.5-hour drive back to Aqaba.

Today’s Excursion – Morning Wadi Rum Safari
We started our morning adventurously with a drive in the Wadi Rum desert which made for an exciting and memorable half-day excursion. Departing the port by coach a one-hour drive on the Desert Highway took us to Wadi Rum Visitors Centre. Here we switched to simple 4×4 open-air pickup trucks with two benches in the pickup bed. We were driven by local Bedouin drivers for the trip into the Wadi Rum desert.
Wadi Rum
As we entered the Wadi Rum region its captivating and mystical beauty astounded us. Black wind-sculpted hills stand like sentinels upon pale sands, interspersed with dramatic rock formations. We drove past the Wadi Rum Rest House and a small Bedouin community with its prized possession camels. Farther into the desert we spotted a few of the traditional black tents dotting the arid landscape.
This trip into the desert provided awesome and ever-changing vistas of multi-colored granite and limestone cliffs rising amid the vast expanse of sand. Parts of Wadi Rum resemble a lunar landscape, aptly called the ‘Valley of the Moon’.
Here the legend of Lawrence of Arabia was born. A rock formation known as The Seven Pillars of Wisdom was immortalized in the book and film about the legendary figure including several portraits of Lawrence carved into the stone in 1918. Aqaba was captured by Lawrence leading the Bedouins to attack from the Wadi Rum desert since all Aqaba’s cannon defenses faced the sea.
The Martian was also filmed in the Wadi Rum desert. It is easy to see how Hollywood transformed the landscape into the surface of Mars.
This Wadi Rum adventure concluded at a Bedouin tent in the desert where we enjoyed a cup of coffee or tea before heading back to Aqaba and the ship by coach.

Today’s Topic: Inspecting Irascible Iran. Iran/Persia is known for its estimable history, its antagonism to the West, its legendary duplicity & its difficulty to conquer
MEET ENRICHMENT LECTURER – DR. MARK ELOVITZ
Back in 2012, Singapore’s Prestige Lifestyle Magazine featured Dr. Elovitz as a “Seminal Visionary.” International audiences acclaim him as a captivating commentator on world affairs. But, Dr. E. – as worldwide aficionados happily refer to him – simply says he is a geopolitician blessed with strategic hindsight.
Prior to lecturing around the globe, Dr. Elovitz served as a litigator, a professor of law, a U.S. government advisor, and a U.S. Air Force Officer. As a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, he has earned four (4) post-graduate degrees.
Dr. Elovitz has published hundreds of articles. His wide-ranging subjects have addressed legal liability, American public policy, world affairs & international geopolitics. Some of Dr. E’s many colorful commentaries include: “Whose Lunch Is The Dragon Eating?”The Machiavellian Mideast,” Bear Claws & Dragon Breath,”“Political Wimps, Wusses & Wieners” and “When Is Later Too Late?”.
In addition, Dr. Elovitz had previously authored a regular newspaper column focusing on enhanced healthcare delivery. He has also been the lively and often provocative anchor/commentator for a World Affairs T.V. show.
Dr. Elovitz has lived in both Europe and the Mideast. As the United States Air Force Officer, he was a liaison to the American military stationed throughout England, Europe, and North Africa. In that role, he received the U.S.A.F. Commendation Medal for “Exemplary Pedagogic Skill.”
Additionally, Dr. Elovitz served in Washington during the Carter and Reagan Administrations as a government advisor on public policy. Dr. Elovitz has testified before the U.S. Congress’ Committee on Foreign Affairs. He has also been a participant in the U.S. Naval War College’s Current Strategy Forum. Currently, Dr. Elovitz is Director of the Centre For Strategic Geopolitics, a world affairs think tank.
Dr. Elovitz is recognized for his penetrating insights into and astute assessments of world affairs. His distinctive careers, extensive worldwide travels, and diverse international contacts produce presentations with uncommon depth and unique understandings of world affairs. He deftly provides the unjaded content and context that are often sadly absent from the print and broadcast media. As a result, Dr. E’s dynamic presentations are colorful, illuminating, and decidedly thought-provoking.

11:00 Enrichment Lecture with Destination Consultant Jon Fleming The Show Lounge (6)
Today’s Topic: Ashdod, Haifa, and the Holy Land – Find out from Jon Fleming why Israel is sacred to the world’s three major religions, and why the Promised Land has been such a sought-after territory for so much of its history.
MEET DESTINATION LECTURER – JON FLEMING
Jon Fleming’s combination of personal experience and historical knowledge, plus an entertaining presentation style has made him very sought after in the Cruise industry. He has sailed on over 250 cruises worldwide including Silversea’s last 9 World Cruises.
Over the last sixteen years, Jon has lectured on over 500 cruise destinations across Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Australasia, and the Pacific. He has an informal and humorous lecture style that aims to make history interesting, accessible, and relevant for his audience, without bombarding them with dates and facts.
Jon was born in London, and studied Modern History at York University. After university, he pursued a successful career in marketing, before deciding to get out of the rat race and devote himself to travel full-time either by cruise ship or at the other end of the luxury scale, in a camper van with his wife Tracy.
His interest in travel was sparked by a two-month train trip around Europe when he was 18, and he has been looking for excuses to travel ever since! He has traveled extensively throughout the world, visiting over 125 countries in the process (the number is growing all the time). Having recently sold his beloved camper van, Jon now spends his summers in Europe looking for the perfect place to finally settle down…

3:00 Enrichment Lecture with Marine Biologist Prof. George Losey The Show Lounge (6)
Today’s Topic: “Future of our Coral reefs”
MEET ENRICHMENT LECTURER DR.
Some of Dr. E’s many colorful commentaries include: “Whose Lunch Is The Dragon Eating?”The Machiavellian Mideast,” Bear Claws & Dragon Breath,” Political Wimps, Wusses & Wieners” and “When Is Later Too Late?”.

Today’s Topic: “Future of our Coral reefs”
MEET ENRICHMENT LECTURER – PROF. GEORGE LOSEY
George S. Losey, Jr., Professor Emeritus, Department of Zoology and Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawai’i.
Professor George Losey was entranced by the ocean growing up with diving mask and plywood body-surfing board on the S.E. Florida coast. When first introduced to the fledgling sport of SCUBA diving at age 14 in 1954, he was literally “hooked.” Exploring and spear fishing throughout Florida and the Bahamas convinced him that this had to be his future. He received his Ph.D. in 1968 from Scripps Institution of Oceanography working on reef fishes of the E. Pacific. His studies introduced him to Ethology, a largely European discipline relatively new to the USA that concentrates on study of the natural behavior of animals and their social interactions. He left La Jolla in 1968 for the warmer waters of the University of Hawai’i and remained as a Professor and Researcher in the Department of Zoology and the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology. His research projects, mostly funded by the National Science Foundation, concentrated on cleaning symbiosis in fish and sea turtles, aggressive and territorial behavior of reef fishes, sex change in reef fishes, learning and instinctive behavior in freshwater and marine fishes and, most recently, ultraviolet vision and coloration in reef fishes and how these fishes cope with UV radiation. He lived underwater as an Aquanaught in Puerto Rico, dove in purse seines of the E. Pacific fishing fleet with dolphins and tunas and has visited marine labs from Israel to Australia.
Dr. Losey first started cruise ship speaking in 1996 on the QE 2 and was, once again, hooked. He decided that this was a far more civilized way to enjoy the ocean than sailing in rough Hawaiian waters in his 30 ft. sloop. Since then he has given talks on various ships with topics in oceanography and climate change, coral reefs, marine biology, Hawaiian natural history, Hawaiian legends and “nature vs. nurture” of human and animal behavior. He often combines research with lecture cruises: In the Caribbean, he converted part of his stateroom into a traveling laboratory to study aspects of ultraviolet vision in fishes purchased in each port. If you are curious, stop George to further pursue the topics of his talks and find out just what he is up to on this cruise. He is always happy to sit and enjoy a “tall cool one” in relaxing conversation.
