Get ready for “Black & White Night”! On this occasion suggested dress code is Casual Black and White. Prepare yourself by getting anything in these colors, to get into the “Black & White Night Spirit”!

Unfortunately, our shore excursion was canceled today because the 60+ miles per hour winds made the sea swell too high to land safely. We arrived at 7:30, waited until 9:00 for the wind to die down, but finally got underway. We were disappointed, but no one wanted to change a venture ashore in these conditions.

In 1907, a “floating factory” was erected in Stromness Harbour; a land station was built in 1912. From 1912 until 1931, Stromness operated as a whaling station. In 1931 it was converted into a ship repair yard with a machine shop and a foundry. It remained operational until 1961 when the site was abandoned.

In 1916, Ernest Shackleton and a small crew landed on the unpopulated southern coast of South Georgia at King Haakon Bay after an arduous sea voyage from Elephant Island in the 22-foot lifeboat. They trekked across South Georgia’s mountainous and glaciated interior in an effort to reach help on the populated northern shore of the island.

After 36 hours of crossing the interior, they arrived at the Stromness administration center which also was the home of the Norwegian whaling station’s manager. This building has been dubbed the “Villa at Stromness” because it represents relative luxury compared to its surroundings. All men were rescued from Elephant Island.

In the decades following its closure, Stromness has been subject to damage from the elements and many of its buildings have been reduced to ruins.

ANTARCTIC FUR SEAL
The Antarctic fur seal (Arctocephalus gazelle) is one of nine species of fur seals that, along with six living species of sea lions, make up the “eared seals” or otariids. Their small external ear flaps distinguish them from the earless “true seals.” The Antarctic fur seal is the only eared seal that commonly lives in Antarctic waters. They are seen frequently in sub-Antarctic South Georgia.
This fur seal is a fairly large animal and has a short and broad snout compared with others in the family. Adult males are dark brown in color. Females and
juveniles tend to be grey with lighter undersides. Antarctic fur seals appear to act alone when foraging and migrating. Males breed polygynously; a strong male may have more than a dozen female partners in a single season. Due to the enormous and growing populations of these seals, their food is a significant proportion of South Georgia’s krill and fish stocks.

7:30 Zodiacs to Fortuna Bay, South Georgia Island.
12:30 ALL ABOARD! THE LAST ZODIAC LEAVES SHORESIDE.
3:00 Enrichment Lecture with Bruno Cazarini (Travel Photography)
Today’s Topic: The Exposure Triangle: Understanding How Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO Work Together
9:45 Showtime! Classical Crossover Tenor Shimi Goodman
With his vast West End experience Shimi Goodman sang a combination of musical theatre classics, opera favorites, and popular hits.

Today’s expedition was beyond expectation. We could see the thousands of penguins and seals from our ship. Today we were able to go shoreside since it was uninhabited with no COVID spreading chance. The Zodiac trip was our best yet, with more experience, flat seas, and easy shallow lending.

We were greeted by dozens of new young and rambunctious baby fur seals and inquisitive King Penguins. The shore crew had to shoo away our seal and penguin greeting party. We felt like celebrities.

The 100s of baby seals acted like teenagers at a 60’s Beatles concert jumping, diving, barking, and pressing forward to see us. Penguins were more dignified waiting for us to walk ashore for a more formal greeting in their Tuxedo stances. The baby seals were cute and adorable with their huge brown eyes and oily fur.

Although there were 100s of seals and penguins greeting us on the shore party, we were briefed the day before that the real treasure was the Penguin Rookery, about a mile up a slight incline. Along the way were 100s of seals. Many of the young “teenagers” would bark and mock charge us imitating the mature seals.

Moms were especially protective of their babies. We learned that each seal mom has a special sound frequency to call their cubs to come for a sucking feeding.

Sandy climbed up a rock to see the penguin colony called a rookery. It was simply awesome in its size of (an estimated) 50,000 to 70,000 penguins pairs huddled together, preening and squawking, all of them smartly dressed in their formalwear. As a bonus, the Expedition Photographer pointed out one of the bird predators that feed on Penguin eggs for her to take a picture.

On the way back, Sandy capture the Expedition Photographer laying prone on the ground taking pictures.

TALE OF TALES Enrichment Lecture Bruno Cazarini (Travel Photography) Bruno is our Expedition Photographer from the Southeast corner of Brazil.

As an awarded expedition photographer & filmmaker, Bruno has already traveled to more than 110 different countries all over the world.

Today’s Topic: The Exposure Triangle: Understanding How Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO Work Together.

He simplified and explained the Exposure Triangle and showed examples of how these work together…amazing. This will improve all our picture taking during our voyage.

South Georgia Islands

South Georgia is an island in the southern Atlantic Ocean that is part of the British Overseas Territory of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. It lies around 1,400 kilometres east of the Falkland Islands. Capt. James Cook visited and claimed South Georgia for Britain in 1775.

Charcoal-black mountains ladled with snow giant glaciers and thriving wildlife combine to make South Georgia one of the great natural islands. Adventure to these far flung lands where the animals are in charge and humans come a distant second.

We witnessed a cacophony of calling birds, natural set pieces like elephant seals clashing and thrashing and crowds of colourful king penguins stretching out as far as the eye can see.

An overseas territory of the UK, this isolated subantarctic island once formed a remote whaling centre at Grytviken where we saw the abandon ships, buildings, docks, and other remains of the former whaling stations. Today whales are free to cruise the icy waters uninhibited.

KING PENGUINS
King penguins are the second largest of the penguin species
(after the Emperor penguin), on average they are around 15kg
(33lb) and 95cm (3.1ft) high. Like many penguins, fully grown
but unfledged chicks can appear to be larger than the adult
birds.
King penguins have colourful feathers around their necks
and heads, this makes them the brightest of all the species of
penguin, there is an estimated world population of 2 million
breeding pairs with some estimates up to 3.2 million. King penguins live on sub-Antarctic islands dotted around the continent from about 46° to 55° South where they form huge colonies on slopes with a nearby beach for access to the sea.

Our Zodiac Tour of Grytviken, South Georgia Island

Unfortunately due to our ship having some COVID cases still onboard we were not allowed to go ashore in Grytviken. However the tour by Zodiac may have been better becasue we covered longer distances and were able to see more than if were ashore.

Although we could not go ashore, our Zodiac tour was better becasue we could travel further and see more than if we were onshore. The trip into the harbor was across morror-like seas. Our Zodiac driver was able to get us close to see the penguins and seals from an “in the water” viewpoint. The approach was awe inspiring steep cliffs, followed by green tundra and vegetation, topped by snow covered mountain peak and glaciers.

We were greeted by many penguins and seals posting on shore and slipping in and out of the sea. There was a lot of vocalizations from barking, singing, grunting, and calls from Mom seals to call their young pups for a feeding. Tne new fur seals were 2 – 3 months old and acted like young teenage humans with lots of energy, horseplay, constant motion, or grownups at Mardi Gras or a Superbowl. King Penguins stretched out their necks, pointer them straight up, and began singing. Since Valentine’s Day is in a few days, we saw penguins preening and courting each other, and seals kissing.

Grytviken looked like a deserted ghost town of an abandoned whaling center with run aground rusting whaling ships, delapidated piers, rusting factories, and storage tanks. Once a major whaling center started by the Norweigians in 1904 and abandon in the mid 1960s. Behind the deserted whaling center are a few new buildings of research facilities and dormrooms for 10 – 12 researchers.

Our final stop for an on shore excursion was cancelled today due to 50 Knot winds after a one hour delay hoping they would pass. Instread, we headed for the Antarctic Sound to view it’s “Iceburg Alley”. The high winds and seas continued as overcast skies and rain started. What floated ahead was an amazing display of massive iceburgs of all shapes and sized. The Captain was skilled at maneuvering us around and through the iceburgs. We learned the largest iceburgs were ones called “Tabular Iceburgs” because they are flat on top. The largest was 650 feet long x 650 feet wide x 650 feet tall = 275 million cubic feet. To get a sense of perspective, our home swimming pool holds 16,000 gallons. This iceberg would fill our home pool 17,164 times. The Expedition Team told us that this iceburg weighed 250 times our Silver Whisper ship. The iceberg was longer and taller than our ship and eight time wider…and that is only the 15% of the iceberg above water. As we were leaving we saw the Argentina Antarctica Research Base.

ANTARCTIC PENINSULA
The Antarctic Peninsula unravels upwards towards South America, reaching out a beckoning finger to the adventurous, who dare to explore this untamed realm.
Stretching up from the heart of the world’s southernmost continent, the Antarctic Peninsula lies a mere 620 miles from Tierra del Fuego and for many offers a spectacular first taste of the snow-blanketed landscapes and colossal ice sculptures which make up Earth’s least-explored continent.
Unseen by humans until 1820 this is an adventure sure to make our hairs stand on end as we experience the thrill of the truly unknown and extraordinary.

Before landing, we had two briefings from the Expedition Crew to prepare us for Antarctica.

ANTARCTIC TREATY GENERAL GUIDELINES
Be prepared for severe and changeable weather. Ensure that your equipment and
clothing meet Antarctic standards. Remember that the Antarctic environment is
inhospitable, unpredictable, and potentially dangerous. Know your capabilities, the
dangers posed by the Antarctic environment, and act accordingly. Mind safety at all
times. Keep a safe distance from dangerous wildlife like fur seals, both on land and sea.
Do not take souvenirs, whether man-made, biological, or geological items, including
feathers, bones, eggs, vegetation, soil, rocks, meteorites, or fossils.
WHY BIOSECURITY?
Invasive animal and plant species pose a very real threat to Antarctica’s vulnerable
environment. By complying with simple measures you will personally be making a real
and valuable contribution to the conservation of Antarctica. The biosecurity measures
implemented are intended to protect Antarctica by preventing the introduction or transfer
between sites of any organic material including animals, plants, seeds, soil, and diseases.

Photos from Yankee Harbor, Antarctica.

We were so excited to be standing on our seventh continent – Antarctica! At Yankee Harbor on Greenwich Island in the South Shetland Islands.

We had endured the suspense of the COVID Go Ashore/Can’t Go Ashore roller coaster.  Then there were many Antarctica Treaty, IAATO, and biosecurity briefings, and getting our Expedition boots, pants, and parkas.  Finally, we were cleared to go as if it were a military invasion.

The excitement was building waking up at 4 AM, turning restlessly until the 5:30 AM alarm.  We struggled to put on our many layers of Antarctic gear (much worse than ski gear), then went to the Showroom to fitted for life jackets and awaited our call to board the Zodiac military-grade pontoon boat.  By this time, we were hot, sweaty, and exhausted.  We had practiced our “Seaman’s Double Handshake Grip” and needed it as we stepped cautiously off our ship onto the Zodiac bobbing in 3-foot sea swells.

Once in the Zodiac, we looked out at the ice shelves, floating pieces of sea-ice, 3-foot waves, freezing temperatures, and overcast skies and felt like our adventure had finally begun.  Our Zodiac was a 5-chamber military-grade rigid inflatable boat with black lifelines to hold on to, and equipped with a 90 HP outboard motor.  Everyone had a death grip on those lines as we sped thru the bumpy and spraying waves for 15 minutes. The sea and harbor were mostly clear of floating ice this morning.  Once ashore, we had to maneuver our legs over the inflatable chambers and step into a foot of water on an uneven surface.  Fortunately, the Expedition Crew Members were there to help stabilize us and walk us ashore and give us walking sticks for stability on the pebbled beach.

Our landing was on a barren black stone beach on an isolated narrow spit of land leading to soaring mountains and thick glacier ice fields.  The beach had a barren “End of the World” feel to it with no snow, no shrubs, and the carcasses of seals and penguins scattered about.  As we scanned the land, there were about 30 small Gentoo Penguins standing at attention and a dozen seals scatted over a one-half mile beach.

We spent an hour exploring the half-mile rocky beach.  Penguins would pose for still photos then waddle away giving us an opportunity to make a movie.  The seals would lumber around, bark, pose and lay down for a nap to digest the morning meal they had caught that morning.  We stumbled onto two tufts of Antarctica Hair Grass as the only vegetation we found.

By the end of the hour, we noticed ice beginning to pile up on one shoreline driven by the wind.  As we returned to catch the Zodiac back to our ship, the original landing site was filled with large chunks of ice crush so our new departure site was several hundred yards away where there was less ice.   Seeing our ship about a mile away, we were delighted to board the Zodiac.  The trip back was more difficult because maneuvering around the large chunks of ice crush and higher seas.

As we approached our ship, expedition crew members greeted our Zodiac, lashed us to the embarkation deck, and assisted us aboard.  As part of the biosecurity procedures our boots and pants were sprayed to remove any material from shore, and we stepped into a disinfectant tray for our boots before ascending the stairs to our preparation room.  We checked back onto the ship with our ID cards, removed our life vests, sat down to remove our boots for the crew to further disinfect, clean, and deliver to our room.  The final treat was a warm washcloth and a glass of warm mull wine.

Reflecting on our expedition, we celebrated our 7th continent visit and were delighted to see the wildlife and views. We now have an appreciation for all the briefings about the fast-changing environment and the need for biosecurity to keep Antarctica pristine.

We set sail to slowly drop off the bottom of the map from Cape Horn, and voyage on an expedition down into the icy underworld of Antarctica.

The Drake Passage is an extraordinary voyage of romantic ocean-faring legend, as we aim for Antarctica’s icy realm. On arrival, skyscraper-sized icebergs saluted us, as we traversed the waters of this continent where snow and ice-dwelling creatures like penguins and whales roam undisturbed.

Your first sight of this most-unexplored place was Yankee Harbor. Tomorrow, we will walk in the footsteps of some of history’s greatest and bravest explorers as we explore famed, snow-covered landmasses.

If the journey across the Drake Passage sounds daunting, don’t worry – even in rough seas, we were never alone. We will be accompanied on this spine-tingling adventure by soaring albatrosses and a protective pod of humpbacks and hourglass dolphins. Converging warm and cool ocean currents attract some spectacular animal life to the passage.

In The Sir Francis Drake Passage

DRESS CODE: CASUAL
For Ladies: DRESSES OR BLOUSES AND PANTS
For Gentlemen: SPORT SHIRTS AND SLACKS
No shorts or flip-flop-type footwear after 6:00 PM in indoor venues

TODAY’S WEATHER Cloudy/chance of rain High: 39°F 4°C Low: 37°F 3°C

Sailing the legendary Drake Passage is an experience that few are ever lucky enough to experience.

The southern tip of the Americas already felt like a wild enough environment, but the sensation of watching the distant cliffs of the peninsular known as the ‘End of the World’ fade into the horizon was one that was equal parts epic, eerie and magical.

The Drake Passage is considered one of the most treacherous voyages for ships to make. Currents at its latitude meet no resistance from any landmass, and waves can top 40 feet, hence its reputation as “the most powerful convergence of seas”. Fortunately, ours were only 17 to 22 feet.

The theme of the Silver Whisper World Cruise was “The Tale of Tales 2022”.

It is an extraordinary north-south world cruise, from 65°S to 65°N, from Antarctica up to Iceland.

We will experience a wide range of cultures, climates, and environments as a tale of magnificently contrasting destinations, from Turkey to South Africa, from South Georgia Island to Seychelles is woven.

During our voyage, we will learn from nine world-renowned special guest lecturers who will share our voyage and spark our imagination with their “Tale of Tales” Storytelling.

We will become the main character in our very own “Tale of Tales”.

NICHOLAS CRANETALE OF TALES – ENDURING EYE:

Nicholas Crane is an English geographer, explorer, writer, broadcaster, past President of Scotland’s Royal Geographical Society, and producer of over 80 BBC geographic films.

He has been exploring the world since 1986 when he located the pole of inaccessibility for the Eurasia landmass and has been traveling to the remote and remarkable ever since!

THE ANTARCTIC LEGACY OF SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON AND FRANK HURLEY

We learned about his life-changing experiences in Antarctica, and the true story of the Shackleton shipwreck. Supported by extraordinary first-hand photography and RGS images.

In 1914 Sir Ernest Shackleton, an established Polar explorer of the heroic age, set out to cross the Antarctic continent. He failed.
However, he achieved one of the greatest feats of polar exploration, he returned with his 28 man team alive. The story of the 1914-17 Shackleton Imperial Endurance Expedition is one of courage and leadership in the face of true adversity. Stoicism and belief during complete uncertainty; by endurance they conquered. An amazing story of survival.
