Beagle Channel is a 150 milelong strait in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the southern tip of South America. The channel is named after the voyage made by HMS Beagle, with the Naturalist, Charles Darwin on his way to the Galapagos Islands. Glacier Alley is a short stretch of Beagle Channel that showcases five tidewater glaciers named after European countries: Germany, Holland, France, Italy, and Spain. These massive blue glaciers inch down the Darwin Mountains from Southern Patagonia’s Darwin Icefield. The Darwin Icefield covers 2,500 sq km of Isla Grande, the largest island in the Tierra del Fuego archipelago.
“As we proceeded along the Beagle Channel, the scenery assumed a peculiar and very magnificent character…The mountains were here about 3,000 feet high and terminated in sharp and jagged points. They rose in one unbroken sweep from the water’s edge and were covered to the height of fourteen or fifteen hundred feet by the dusky-coloured forest.”
“It is scarcely possible to imagine anything more beautiful than the beryl-like blue of these glaciers, and especially as contrasted with the dead white of the upper expanse of snow.” – Charles Darwin, 29 January 1833.

Covid restrictions have meant that we haven’t got the best from our land experiences in Chile. Punta Arenas wouldn’t even let us off the ship!
So from the ship Enrichment Travel Lecture Jon Fleming, here is what we learned about Punta Arenas.
Welcome to Chile’s City at the End of The World – a wind-whipped, fractured land of islands, glacial fjords and mountains, which drop away towards Antarctica.
A hardy city, where the temperature hovers in single figures throughout much of the year, Punta Arenas nevertheless offers a warm welcome and refuge, ahead of – and following – epic adventures and expeditions south across the Drake Passage by explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Captain Scott stopped here in 1904 testing the postal service sending 400 letters of his successful return. The city welcomed the rescued Ernest Shackleton and his Endurance crew to these shores in 1916.
Punta Arenas is a remote place, but with custom-free status, and more than 120,000 people calling it home it’s also surprisingly cosmopolitan. The commercial center of Magallanes Punta Arenas is fueled by Chilean oil and gas and has established itself as a global center for Antarctic research with teams from various countries basing themselves here.
The town is built around the Plaza de Armas, its central square – be sure to kiss the toe of the Monumento del Indio Patagon statue, said to guarantee you good luck on your return. Look down across this colorful city, stretching out to meet the waters of the Straits of Magellan, from the viewpoint at Cerro De La Cruz.
Natural wonders abound in the region, whether it’s Alberto de Agostini National Park’s glacial sculptures, or Torres del Paine National Park’s soaring mountains, rushing waterfalls, and picturesque lakes. Offshore, in the Strait of Magellan, you can find the birdlife sanctuary of Magdalena Island – an uninhabited island, where hundreds of thousands of penguins march and crowds of cormorants and gulls call out.

PUNTA ARENAS FROM ABOVE
Cerro de la Cruz ( the Hill of the Cross), located a short walk away from the center, is the most popular viewpoint in Punta Arenas. Getting up there isn’t very difficult and the views are really nice. You can see the colorful city in its full glory, the landscape beyond it as well as the Strait of Magellan with ships crossing the passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

MANDATORY ANTIGEN TEST FOR RE-ENTRY
As a compulsory requirement of the Chilean Healthy Authorities protocol, all guests are obliged to undergo a COVID-19 rapid antigen test before re-entering Chile.

Looming like a colossal river frozen in the icy hold of time the Garibaldi Glacier shivers down our spine that had absolutely nothing to do with the fjord weather’s chill.
A stunning unimaginably vast wedge of slowly creeping blue-white ice the glacier is a fitting climax to the voyage through the cinematic majesty of the Garibaldi Fjord.
We sailed amid tumbling waterfalls tightly-packed forestry and soaring mountains as we explored the glacier-sculpted Parque Nacional Alberto de Agostini. It is the newest member of Chile’s exclusive club of extraordinary remote National Parks.
Spread across the fractured lands of South America’s southern tip this is the dramatic region where the peaks of the Andes mountain range plunge down into the depths of the icy ocean generating some of Chile’s most spectacular scenery.
The fresh chunks of ice add to the floating confetti of tiny frozen islands all around the ship ranging in hues from creamy whites to electric blues.
It may appear like a frigid unforgiving environment at first glance but the fjord is alive with unique fauna and flora and recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve. Full of diverse ecosystems we spotted penguins, sea lions, and Peruvian condors all adding to the rich tapestry of life here.

Saturday, January 29, 2022 – Photo of the Day – Castro, Chile

SATURDAY, 29 JANUARY 2022 CASTRO, CHILE
Arrival: 8:00AM Last Tender: 12:30PM Departure: 1:00PM
TODAY’S WEATHER Partly Sunny High: 52°F 11°C Low: 36°F 2°C
DRESS CODE: INFORMAL

For Gentlemen: JACKETS (TIE OPTIONAL)

Castro is a city on Chiloé Island in Chile’s Lake District. Colorful wooden stilt houses line the waterfront. On Plaza de Armas, the yellow, early-20th-century San Francisco Church has 2 steeples and a distinctive wooden interior. Nearby, woven baskets are sold at the craft fair. The Museum of Modern Art Chiloé displays works by Chilean artists. To the west, Chiloé National Park is home to sea lions.

The capital of Chile’s Chiloe Island, Castro is big, bright, and boisterous.
Colorful wooden huts (called palafitos) teeter on stilts over the city’s waterfront, inviting you into a slice of life that’s sure to brighten any day. Warm welcomes abound, music seeps from the street corners and life is celebrated with gusto all over the city. If you are looking for a healthy mix of culture and cosmopolitanism, then you have found it in Castro.
The island is renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage Site wooden churches. Around 70 churches were built in the 17th and 18th centuries, embodying the intangible richness of the Chiloé Archipelago, and bearing witness to a successful fusion of indigenous and European culture. Just 16 of the churches are classified by UNESCO, as prime examples of the full integration of the architecture in the landscape and environment, as well as to the spiritual values of the communities.
The city is Chile’s third oldest city in existence, founded in 1576. Castro lived peaceably – bar a few attacks from Dutch pirates – until 1837, when it was destroyed by an earthquake, wiping out most of the population. By 1912 the railway had arrived, allowing the town to develop again. Tragically, the city was once again destroyed in 1960 by a series of earthquakes, tsunamis, and fires.
History lovers will definitely enjoy The Regional Museum of Castro. Not only does
the small museum house an interesting array of Huilliche relics, but a series of photographs depicting Castro pre-1960 is on display.

Any tour of Castro begins with this much-photographed 1906 church, constructed in the style of the archipelago’s wooden churches, only bigger and grander. Depending on your perspective, terms like “pretty” or “garish” describe the orange-and-lavender exterior colors chosen when the structure was spruced up
before Pope John Paul II’s 1987 visit.
Today’s Schedule
Due to covid restrictions, we had another “Panoramic Bus Tour” of Castro and the surrounding countryside. We were fortunate to have a sunny day in a city that averages over 200 rainy days per year.

Since time immemorial Valparaiso has inspired writers, poets, musicians, and artists alike. If the city is still a little rough around the edges, this only adds to its bohemian ambiance; the architecture, style, street art, nightlife, and live music scenes of Valparaiso are some of the best in the world. Add colorful clifftop homes to the mix and you’ll soon see why Valparaiso is many people’s favorite Chilean city.
The city was founded in 1536 by Spanish conquistador Juan de Saavedra, who named the city after his birthplace. Many of the colonial buildings he implemented are still standing today, despite the rain, wind, fire, and several earthquakes (one of which almost leveled the city in 1906).
Quirky architecture also abounds; poetry lovers and amateur architects will no doubt want to make the 45 km trip south to Chilean poet laureate (and Nobel Prize winner) Pablo Neruda’s ship-shaped house and museum for a taste of the extraordinary.
The city and region are also extremely well known for their love of good food and wine. The vineyards of the nearby Casablanca Valley – first planted in the early 1980s – have earned worldwide recognition in a relatively short space of time. However, Chile’s viticulture history does date back much farther than that. De Saavedra brought grapevines on his voyage to South America in order to make his own wine and this led to a new grape brandy being created, Pisco. Today give any Chilean a Pisco and wherever they are in the world, they will be home.

Antofagasta (in red) is the most northern major city in Chile just below the border with Peru.

If archaeological zones, landscaped plazas, and giant hands, are your travel cup of tea then look no further than Antofagasta. Set between the Pacific Ocean and the mountains, the city is Chile’s second most populated place, and by far the largest in the northern region.
Once the country’s primary export port, notably for minerals including nitrate and
later, silver, today Antofagasta is still the country’s center for mineral mining.
Antofagasta was once part of Bolivia and only became Chilean in 1904 after it was captured in the War of the Pacific. Under the subsequent treaty, Chile agreed to construct a rail link to Bolivia in return for the city.
Today the city still enjoys relative stress-free travel to La Paz, through
some of the most scenic and spectacular landscapes in the world. The railway link, which extended south as well as north, naturally brought colossal growth, expansion which is still continuing today.
In recent years, Antofagasta has seen high rise hotels and buildings sprout
up amid the jumble of old-fashioned plazas, former Railway Stations, and wooden-fronted Victorian and Georgian buildings can be found along the Barrio Histórico.
The city borders the arid Atacama Desert, aka the world’s driest place. As if the lunar-like landscape was not enough, the aforementioned “Hand of the Desert”, an 11-meter tall sculpture of a hand reaching up to the stars is located about 60 km from Antofagasta and is surely a must for anyone who is interested in alien experiences.
