102 miles from the historic city of Hanoi, the lovely 580 sq. mile area of 3,000 odd rocky, limestone islands with caves and grottos to explore provides a stunning vista that seems to go on and on.

A crucial coastal city, once known as Amoy, Xiamen’s name translates as ‘door to the house,’ reflecting its centuries-old role as a gateway to China. Gulangyu is a place to visit and appreciate its historic, colonial role. Temples abound, reflecting Xiamen’s unique demographics, too.

2:00 Enrichment Lecture with John Stainton – The Lost Aviator:

In 1975, John Stainton joined an expedition into the Sahara Desert to find an old biplane lost since 1933. The story behind the lost pilot whose mummified body was found by the wreck revealed a tragic love story that may have ended in murder.

3:00 Enrichment Lecture with Dr Robin Craig – The Time Machine: Exploring Time Travel in Fiction and Science
Unveil the mysteries surrounding the nature of time and its portrayal in fictional works on time travel. Gain insights into the science behind time travel and ponder the challenges one might encounter in such journeys.

The prefecture is a collection of 160 islands south of mainland Japan scattered in a vast area of the Pacific Ocean. Before becoming a part of Japan, it had a fascinating trade history but is probably best remembered for the Battle of Okinawa in 1945.

Hiroshima: The site of the devastating first strike of an atomic bomb as an act of war
Hiroshima’s Peace Park is now a place of reflection – its skeletal domed building a stark reminder of the futility of war and the 100,000 who died. The museum is an essential destination. Miyajima, a short ferry ride away, is the famous red Torii Gate site in the sea opposite Hiroshima.

Shimi was born in Tel Aviv, Israel, and currently lives in London, England. He received a BA Honours in Musical Theatre from Guildford School of Acting. He has been described by the press as “a true triple threat” and a recent critic said “His range is exceptional and brought me to my feet”.

    • As our World Cruise concludes, discover what awaits us as we sail to our final port, the “City by the Bay.”
  • Enrichment Lecture with Captain Rick Reynolds: Assassination of Concorde
    • A study of the politics behind the scenes culminating in the final grounding of Concorde.
      • The French Government did not want to continue the Concorde because Air France’s flights from Paris were not profitable, while Britain wanted to continue because its flights were profitable. Although the French were contractually obligated to pay 50% of the future maintenance costs, they refused.

Dinner tonight was in The Restaurant.
