MEET DESTINATION LECTURER MICHAEL DISPEZIO
From hosting National Geographic broadcasts to shepherding the Discovery Channel to its first Emmy nomination, Dr. Michael DiSpezio is a renaissance educator, TV host, and science author.

A former marine biologist who worked as a research assistant to a Nobel Prize winner, he left the laboratory and his instructor role at Boston University to celebrate his passion for education as a K-12 classroom teacher for ten years. Returning to graduate school, he completed his doctorate in education.

Michael has written over 25 trade books and coauthored over 60 textbooks. His latest science program, Into Science, is published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

In addition to his work with leading print publishers, he has developed materials for Google, Disney, the Discovery Channel, PBS, Children’s Television Workshop, MTV, Scientific American Frontiers, and the US Department of Education.

After over four decades of globe-trotting, integrated with an understanding of communication pedagogy, Michael has become a master teacher and presenter. His talks are not merely lectures but interactive experiences supported by captivating visuals, movies, and animations. He facilitates an entertaining journey that explores and illuminates the voyage ahead.

Jakub Trasak is among his generation’s most talented and versatile violin players and producers. He began performing at the age of three, and his career includes more than 30 prime television appearances and live shows in venues such as Carnegie Hall, Boston Symphony Hall, and the Kennedy Center. He grew up in the Czech Republic and graduated from Prague Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.

Julian Gargiulo is a pianist, composer, and Steinway Artist. He performs regularly
in Carnegie Hall, United Nations, Moscow Conservatory Hall, Symphony Stage in
Singapore, and Seymour Theatre in Sydney, and has been featured on Radio and
TV stations in North America, Europe, and Asia. His first recording for Deutsche
Grammophon “Estro,” with violinist María Dueñas, was released earlier this year
to wide acclaim.

Julian’s concerts are always an interactive experience. Julian. He captivates his audience with his technical precision and Jerry Seinfeld-ish wit. Julian invites his audience to abandon all preconceived notions about classical concerts. On stage, he presents a program that includes classical standards, Tango transcriptions, and his compositions. In between pieces, he engages the audience by sharing his personal stories, anecdotes from the lives of composers, and his home remedies for jet lag.

In 2015, Julian presented the first edition of ‘Getting to Carnegie’, an international music competition that offers musicians from around the world a chance to share the stage at Carnegie Hall. In 2020 Julian and his wife Elektra started a New Music Series called “One Classical Minute” (www.oneclassicalminute.com) described as “High Culture in Low Doses” for everything you never wanted to know about classical music, and never bothered to ask.

Kate has performed in prestigious locations worldwide, including Beijing’s Forbidden City, New York’s Waldorf Astoria, Washington’s Smithsonian Museum, and Edinburgh Castle.

Kate’s ability to speak and sing in many languages led her to move to Hong Kong in 2007, where she lived for 13 years performing as a solo entertainer across Asia. In March 2020, Kate moved to beautiful Queenstown in New Zealand, where she now resides.

BOAT BUILDING COMPETITION
PREPARE TO GET CREATIVE AND GET CRAFTING

A renowned and highly anticipated World Cruise tradition is our annual boat boat-building
a ‘Sea-Worthy’ boat. The boats must undergo specific trials and challenges to be crowned the Silver Shadow champion. You are invited to work alone or in teams.

The boat will be tested on overall creativity of design and presentation, ability to float un-assisted in the pool, and the amount of weight it can hold (the weights used will be 12oz. cans, so the ship needs to be designed to store those types of weights).

You may use any materials you can find around the ship to construct your boat, provided that you will not cause damage to any property of the Silver Shadow. We also want you to ‘create’ your ship, so no using of large materials such as life-jackets, trash cans, etc, and the total length of the ship can be no longer than 40 inches.

A table with materials available for you to use in your ship’s construction. These materials will only be available at the times listed in the Chronicles, so plan accordingly. Be as creative as you want in your presentation and design, and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

Both Captains Cook and Bligh ended up on the Great Barrier Reef; both made it off and continued their great navigation careers. The Endeavour was shipwrecked, and Bligh and his eighteen men landed on the reef. They mapped the reef and learned more about the new land and the immense size of the reef.
