Easter Island Today

Understand the modern challenges facing this and other remote islands.

James Grant-Peterkin is a Cambridge University graduate and the British Honorary Consul on Easter Island. He has been studying Polynesian culture, linguistics, and archaeology for over 20 years, most of those while living on Easter Island, and is the author of the guidebook “A Companion to Easter Island”. He has lectured extensively on Eastern Polynesia on cruise ships and at educational institutions worldwide.

1000 years ago the islanders set up their large moai on platforms to attract the favor of the gods to provide prosperity, security, and wealth. Ten centuries later, thanks to a thriving tourist industry, this is exactly what the moai are doing. The introduction of reliable Internet daily flights to the mainland, and a wider range of consumer goods and activities have removed the sense of remoteness.

The Great Pacific Explorers – Francis Drake – ‘El Draco’

Hero or Devil? Explorer, navigator, warrior and pirate?

Terry Bishop was raised and educated in the west of England. For 35 years he was a psychiatric nurse, a child protection social worker, and a senior manager in Youth Justice and Child Care.

Terry has led groups of walkers/explorers across many of the battlefields of Europe and has explored historic sites in the USA, Africa, and beyond. He has trekked the foothills of the Himalayas, ventured across the Namib Desert, and driven relief supplies from England to Belarus post-Chornobyl.

A real-life Troubadour, he seeks to inform and entertain, incorporating humor, music, and song. Terry is also an accomplished folk musician and has produced two films on social issues.

He and his wife Julie share their time when not cruising between homes in Rochester, England, and Andalusia, Southern Spain.

Sir Francis Drake – to the Spanish, a wayward pirate; to the English, a hero. He could be considered a morally dubious hero in many ways, perhaps even a villain, but was still incredibly influential in Tudor times.

Sir Francis Drake (c. 1540 – 28 January 1596) was an English explorer and privateer best known for his circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition between 1577 and 1580. This was the first English circumnavigation, and the third circumnavigation overall. He is also known for participating in the early English slaving voyages of his cousin, Sir John Hawkins.

In 1572, he set sail on his first independent mission, privateering along the Spanish Main. Drake’s circumnavigation began on 15 December 1577. He crossed the Pacific Ocean, until then an area of exclusive Spanish interest, and laid claim to New Albion, plundering coastal towns and ships for treasure and supplies as he went. He arrived back in England on 26 September 1580.

Easter Island: Collapse?

Discover how this once mighty civilization comes to a crashing end.

He has lectured extensively on Eastern Polynesia on cruise ships and at educational institutions worldwide.

Rapa Nui is often seen as a cautionary example of societal collapse. In this story, made popular by geographer Jared Diamond’s bestselling book Collapse, the Indigenous people of the island, the Rapanui, so destroyed their environment that, by around 1600, their society fell into a downward spiral of warfare, cannibalism, and population decline. These catastrophes, the collapse narrative explains, resulted in the destruction of the social and political structures that were in place during precolonial times, though the people of Rapa Nui survive and persist on the island to the present day.

500 Easter Island moai were moved out of the quarry along a network of roads to platforms called ahu all over the island. The largest of the moved moai is over 33 feet tall and weighs approximately 81.5 tons. Theories on how they were moved.

The Great Pacific Explorers – Ferdinand Magellan

The ‘Nearly Man’ – traitor or hero? Discover more about this complex character

He and his wife Julie share their time when not cruising between homes in Rochester, England, and Andalusia, Southern Spain.

Ferdinand Magellan (4 February 1480 – 27 April 1521) was a Portuguese explorer. He is best known for having planned and led the 1519 Spanish expedition to the East Indies across the Pacific Ocean to open a maritime trade route, during which he discovered the interoceanic passage bearing thereafter his name and achieved the first European navigation from the Atlantic to Asia.

During this voyage, Magellan was killed in the Battle of Mactan in 1521 in the present-day Philippines, after running into resistance from the indigenous population led by Lapulapu, who consequently became a Philippine national symbol of resistance to colonialism.

10:00 TALE OF TALES: Tale Teller Special Guest EAMONN GEARON
Today’s Topic: Tales from The Sahara: Encounters with the World’s Greatest Desert

Eamonn Gearon is an author, analyst, and public historian who has spent more than 20 years living and working across the Middle East and North Africa.

Eamonn spent many happy times exploring the Sahara as a young man, alone but for his trio of camels. He has never lost money on the resale of a camel.

After honeymooning in Kabul, Afghanistan, Eamonn and his American wife moved to Washington D.C. to teach at Johns Hopkins-SAIS. While there, he was approached by the U.S. Department of State to design and deliver training for American diplomats.

Eamonn is now training British diplomats at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, where he also pioneered online Area Studies training.

Eamonn is passionate about education in its broadest possible sense, which includes helping those of us already out in the world to better understand it and each other.

He has published a number of courses for the former “The Great Courses”, now known as Wondrium.

Gearon is best known for his book The Sahara: A Cultural History

COOKING DEMONSTRATION A CULINARY MASTER CLASS

Greece’s islands boast some of the healthiest and most delicious food in the world, with succulent honey-soaked treats and exceptional olive oil.

Each island has unique products to discover, whether it be olives, wine, cheese, or honey.

Today David prepares dishes from Crete and Cyprus whilst sharing food stories of the islands.

2:45 Enrichment Lecture with Destination Consultant Jon Fleming
Today’s Topic: Istanbul – The City Where Europe Meets Asia

MEET DESTINATION LECTURER JON FLEMING
Jon Fleming’s combination of personal experience and historical knowledge, plus an entertaining presentation style has made him very sought after in the Cruise industry. He has sailed on over 250 cruises worldwide including Silversea’s last 9 World Cruises.

Over the last sixteen years, Jon has lectured on over 500 cruise destinations across Europe, the Caribbean, South America, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Australasia, and the Pacific.

He has an informal and humorous lecture style that aims to make history interesting, accessible, and relevant for his audience, without bombarding them with dates and facts.

Jon was born in London, and studied Modern History at York University. After university, he pursued a successful career in marketing, before deciding to get out of the rat race and devote himself to travel full-time either by cruise ship or at the other end of the luxury scale, in a camper van with his wife Tracy.

His interest in travel was sparked by a two-month train trip around Europe when he was 18, and he has been looking for excuses to travel ever since! He has traveled extensively throughout the world, visiting over 125 countries in the process (the number is growing all the time). Having recently sold his beloved camper van, Jon now spends his summers in Europe looking for the perfect place to finally settle down…

3:45 Enrichment Lecture with World Affairs Lecturer Dr. Mark Elovitz
Today’s Topic: Talking Turkey & Erdogan’s Autocracy.

MEET ENRICHMENT LECTURER DR. MARK ELOVITZ
Back in 2012, Singapore’s Prestige Lifestyle Magazine featured Dr. Elovitz as a “Seminal Visionary.” International audiences acclaim him as a captivating commentator on world affairs. But, Dr. E. – as worldwide aficionados happily refer to him – simply says he is a geopolitician blessed with strategic hindsight.
Prior to lecturing around the globe, Dr. Elovitz served as a litigator, a professor of law, a U.S. government advisor, and a U.S. Air Force Officer. As a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, he has earned four (4) post-graduate degrees.
Dr. Elovitz has published hundreds of articles. His wide-ranging subjects have addressed legal liability, American public policy, world affairs & international geopolitics. Some of Dr. E’s many colorful commentaries include: “Whose Lunch Is The Dragon Eating?”The Machiavellian Mideast,” Bear Claws & Dragon Breath,” Political Wimps, Wusses & Wieners” and “When Is Later Too Late?”.
In addition, Dr. Elovitz had previously authored a regular newspaper column focusing on enhanced healthcare delivery. He has also been the lively and often provocative anchor/commentator for a World Affairs T.V. show.
Dr. Elovitz has lived in both Europe and the Mideast. As the United States Air Force Officer, he was a liaison to the American military stationed throughout England, Europe, and North Africa. In that role, he received the U.S.A.F. Commendation Medal for “Exemplary Pedagogic Skill.”
Additionally, Dr. Elovitz served in Washington during the Carter and Reagan Administrations as a government advisor on public policy. Dr. Elovitz has testified before the U.S. Congress’ Committee on Foreign Affairs. He has also been a participant in the U.S. Naval War College’s Current Strategy Forum. Currently, Dr. Elovitz is Director of the Centre For Strategic Geopolitics, a world affairs think tank.
Dr. Elovitz is recognized for his penetrating insights into and astute assessments of world affairs. His distinctive careers, extensive worldwide travels, and diverse international contacts produce presentations with uncommon depth and unique understandings of world affairs. He deftly provides the unjaded content and context that are often sadly absent from the print and broadcast media. As a result, Dr. E’s dynamic presentations are colorful, illuminating, and decidedly thought-provoking.

ALEXANDRITE GEM
This rare gem was named after Czar Alexander II for two reasons. First, the gem was discovered in 1830 in the Ural Mountains of Russia on the birthday of the Czar.
Second, its changing colors, red and green, are the same as the Russian Imperial Guard.

It has been a prevalent belief in Russia this gemstone can bring in a good omen for the owner and is also the birthstone for the month of June.

The son of renowned concert violinist and conductor, Zeki Ataman, Naki was born in the ancient city of Istanbul but was raised and educated in Turkey’s capital, Ankara, where
he still resides.

He began his musical studies at the age of 4 and made his stage debut at 8.
It is no surprise that Naki was chosen by the Turkish Ministry of Culture to be the official representative of the country’s cultural and goodwill interests throughout the world, thus
making him a true and unique Ambassador of Music.

In fact, Naki was chosen to represent Turkey at a concert for the United Nations Cultural conference in Vienna in 1975, for which he conceived the idea of an evening of music
encompassing all nations. His “Around the World” concert is basically that same program he created for the U.N.
As well versed in popular music, jazz, and musical comedy as he is in light classics, Naki is a favorite on concert stages throughout the world. Naki also performs on many cruise lines.
Given Naki Ataman’s background, the musical accomplishments of this multitalented man

3:00 Enrichment Lecture with Marine Biologist Prof. George Losey The Show Lounge (6)
Today’s Topic: “Future of our Coral reefs”

3:00 Enrichment Lecture with Marine Biologist Prof. George Losey The Show Lounge (6)
Today’s Topic: “Future of our Coral reefs”

MEET ENRICHMENT LECTURER – PROF. GEORGE LOSEY
George S. Losey, Jr., Professor Emeritus, Department of Zoology and Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology, University of Hawai’i.
Professor George Losey was entranced by the ocean growing up with diving mask and plywood body-surfing board on the S.E. Florida coast. When first introduced to the fledgling sport of SCUBA diving at age 14 in 1954, he was literally “hooked.” Exploring and spear fishing throughout Florida and the Bahamas convinced him that this had to be his future. He received his Ph.D. in 1968 from Scripps Institution of Oceanography working on reef fishes of the E. Pacific. His studies introduced him to Ethology, a largely European discipline relatively new to the USA that concentrates on study of the natural behavior of animals and their social interactions. He left La Jolla in 1968 for the warmer waters of the University of Hawai’i and remained as a Professor and Researcher in the Department of Zoology and the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology. His research projects, mostly funded by the National Science Foundation, concentrated on cleaning symbiosis in fish and sea turtles, aggressive and territorial behavior of reef fishes, sex change in reef fishes, learning and instinctive behavior in freshwater and marine fishes and, most recently, ultraviolet vision and coloration in reef fishes and how these fishes cope with UV radiation. He lived underwater as an Aquanaught in Puerto Rico, dove in purse seines of the E. Pacific fishing fleet with dolphins and tunas and has visited marine labs from Israel to Australia.
Dr. Losey first started cruise ship speaking in 1996 on the QE 2 and was, once again, hooked. He decided that this was a far more civilized way to enjoy the ocean than sailing in rough Hawaiian waters in his 30 ft. sloop. Since then he has given talks on various ships with topics in oceanography and climate change, coral reefs, marine biology, Hawaiian natural history, Hawaiian legends and “nature vs. nurture” of human and animal behavior. He often combines research with lecture cruises: In the Caribbean, he converted part of his stateroom into a traveling laboratory to study aspects of ultraviolet vision in fishes purchased in each port. If you are curious, stop George to further pursue the topics of his talks and find out just what he is up to on this cruise. He is always happy to sit and enjoy a “tall cool one” in relaxing conversation.

HUBERT: DESIGNER
THE BOUTIQUE ABOARD SILVERSEA 11:30 AM
For nearly 25 years Hubert Gesser has traveled the globe in search of nature’s most beautiful treasures. He looks for the best the world has to offer in a spectrum of gemstones from
classic blue sapphire to exotic Paraiba tourmalines. Brazilian born and raised Hubert came to the United States when he was 18-years-old, attending the University of California, where
he earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

But when Hubert met someone who traveled the world importing gems, he decided without hesitation, to invest his then entire net worth into loose gemstones.
This decision inspired a career change that he would build into a successful gem lapidary house and jewelry manufacturing company known today as Hubert Inc.
Join us in the Boutique to view this unique collection.

TOM SEALS – THE PIANO MAN
TONIGHT’S SHOW AT 10:00 PM AT THE SHOW LOUNGE, DECK 6
The mantle of UK Piano Man has been dominated by Elton John, Jools Holland, and Jamie Cullum. Over the past five decades, no one else has come remotely close – until now that is!
Fresh from his sell-out “Let The Good Times Roll” Tour – Tom Seals, “quite possibly the future of jazz and blues”, has the world at his fingertips. His virtuoso solo-ing, excellent improvisations skills, and distinctive voice have left top industry officials hailing him as the UK’s finest boogie-woogie and blues pianist/vocalist.
Still, only in his mid-twenties, Seals is surely destined for greatness. Hot on the heels of sold-out shows across the globe including London’s legendary Ronnie Scott’s, a stunning performance at Birdland Jazz Club on Broadway in New York, and working with Jools Holland, Tom Seals’ star is destined to soar stratospherically in 2021 with the release of his debut album, own TV show and festival appearances worldwide.
Tom is now filming a ‘live’ version of the show. Recent guests include Slade’s Noddy Holder,
Whispering Bob Harris and comic Jo Brand. The UK’s newest piano man is here.

MEET ENRICHMENT LECTURER PROF.

MEET OUR NEW CAPTAIN – MICHELE MACARONE PALMIERI
Michele was born in Sorrento, South Italy. He completed his nautical studies in the ‘Istituto Nautico Nino Bixio’ in Piano Di Sorrento 1976. In the same year he joined the Italian cargo line ‘Lloyd Triestino’ as a cadet for a period of 18 months.

He then went on to become an Officer on many different cargo ships, including gas tankers, chemical and bulk carriers. In 1987, with the Ocean Quest cruise line he had the opportunity to join a passenger ship for the first time with the rank of Second Officer until 1989. Roughly two year later he moved to the Renaissance Cruise Line where he covered the position of Chief Officer until 1994.

Silversea Cruises offered him the position of First Officer on the Silver Wind. He was on board during the building and construction of the ship and for the maiden voyage. For his second contract, on the Silver Cloud, he was promoted to Chief Officer Navigator and since 1998 in the position of Staff Captain, or Second in Command. Captain Macarone Palmieri was appointed Master of the Silver Cloud for the first time in the early 2002. During the last few years he has been in Command of all Silversea’ s ships.

In his recent appointment as Master of the Silver Whisper, Captain Macarone Palmieri is responsible first and foremost for the safety of the vessel and all guests and crew on board, as well as the navigation and the actual maneuvering in and out of port. He conducts weekly meetings with all department heads to ensure the smooth operation of the ship. Presently living in South Africa, during his vacation, he enjoys to spend quality time in Italy and South Africa with his sons, daughters and dogs.
