Our final stop for an on shore excursion was cancelled today due to 50 Knot winds after a one hour delay hoping they would pass. Instread, we headed for the Antarctic Sound to view it’s “Iceburg Alley”. The high winds and seas continued as overcast skies and rain started. What floated ahead was an amazing display of massive iceburgs of all shapes and sized. The Captain was skilled at maneuvering us around and through the iceburgs. We learned the largest iceburgs were ones called “Tabular Iceburgs” because they are flat on top. The largest was 650 feet long x 650 feet wide x 650 feet tall = 275 million cubic feet. To get a sense of perspective, our home swimming pool holds 16,000 gallons. This iceberg would fill our home pool 17,164 times. The Expedition Team told us that this iceburg weighed 250 times our Silver Whisper ship. The iceberg was longer and taller than our ship and eight time wider…and that is only the 15% of the iceberg above water. As we were leaving we saw the Argentina Antarctica Research Base.
