Marcel Lichtenstein, Biologist and Astronomer
Hailing from the Costa Rican countryside, Marcel was raised in a multilingual family of professors, photographers, and naturalists. At a young age, he became fascinated by all aspects of tropical and subtropical ecosystems and he continues to photograph these environments today.
For more than 25 years Marcel worked as a cultural and naturalist guide in Costa Rica, where he’s spent more than 4,000 hours leading tours on the Rainforest Aerial Tram.
Since 1997 his conservation efforts through his own company, Bosque Protegido, helped preserve 65 hectares of forest next to the Braulio Carrillo national park. Additionally, Jungle Jewels, his high-quality native jewelry outfit, donates 30 percent of its profits to purchase rainforest for conservation purposes.
Marcel’s profound passion for nature stimulated his studies in photography, astronomy, botany, ornithology, marine ecology, and natural history. Whether it’s presenting an evening stargazing experience or a knot demonstration, Marcel has led expedition tours in 27 countries of Europe, South, and Central America, as well as in the Caribbean and even Antarctica.

George Kennedy, Polar Geopolitics
George is an Australian social scientist specializing in polar geopolitics. He has completed a Master’s in Anthropology at Monash University and a Graduate Diploma in Antarctic Governance at the Australian Institute for Marine and Antarctic Science. Since completing his studies, George has worked within the policy office of the Australian Antarctic Division, collaborating with other Antarctic Treaty Parties on sustainable tourism practices and environmental protection frameworks.
Prior to his studies in political science, George worked as an ALS Paramedic in Australia, as well as a community development coordinator for conservation organizations in Latin America.
George’s passion for the polar regions emerged whilst working with a local environmental nonprofit in Patagonia. During his time in Tierra del Fuego, he was fortunate enough to visit Antarctica in 2017, inspiring his subsequent academic focus on the region. George has been guiding in Antarctica since 2019, sharing stories of its incredible wildlife and landscapes, as well as, of course, its unique politics!
When not on board or in the office, George can be found traveling the world on his motorcycle. He first embarked on his KLR650 from Mongolia in 2016, riding from across Asia to India, around Australia, and from Argentina to Mexico. He plans to continue riding north to Alaska this summer.
